|Collective Book Circles: A new kind of book club
Organizing a book circle is a beautiful way to bring people together to think, talk and imagine together–it can even be a kind of collective visioning. People build a common language, deepen relationships and make connections that generate all sorts of unexpected power.
Chapter Two of Collective Visioning, “Laying the Groundwork for Collective Visioning,” has many ideas that could apply to organizing a book circle, including how to bring diverse groups together, how to find and recruit people that bring varied experiences and points of view to the group, how to create a welcoming and inclusive space, building trust and helping people work together so that everyone has an equal say.
For the first ten groups who contact us here to let us know that you’re starting a book club, we’ll send a copy of Spirit in Action’s Guide to Working in Diverse Groups for each of the participants in your group!
Spirit in Action
Spirit in Action is a catalyst for building a strong, healthy, unified movement for social change that works for equality, human rights, the redistribution of resources and protection of the earth and environment. Our programs and trainings have developed from listening to social justice activists and exploring how to begin to do things differently. We support, nourish and connect those who are passionate about justice, love, equality, creativity and sustainability.
Progressive Communicators Network
The Progressive Communicators Network strengthens and amplifies the power, voices and vision of grassroots movements that are working for racial, social, economic and environmental justice. Network members use communication strategy, framing and messaging, and media tools to enhance the influence of social change movements on public policy and opinion so that we can realize a world without poverty, racism and other forms of oppression.
